Engineer to Cake Designer

Caroline Halliday, Scottish wedding cake designer
A Little Bit About Me
My name is Caroline Halliday. I've always loved arts and crafts, and take great delight in creating beautiful things. At school I shared my time between the art and science departments, loving both in equal measure. Torn between art school and an engineering degree, I went off to university where I gained a 1st class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering with Aerodynamics, swiftly followed by a PhD. After graduating I spent many happy years working for Rolls-Royce Aerospace in aircraft engine design.

Faces & Flowers
During my time at Rolls-Royce I continued to pursue my love of arts and crafts, trying my hand at oil painting; watercolours; pastels; mixed media; jewellery making; felting; dress making; knitting; quilting; card making... You name it, I've tried it! The precision and skills needed for my engineering career crossed directly over into whichever art or craft I tried, and I pride myself in precision, intricacy and meticulous attention to every detail.

In 2009 my husband and I became proud parents and I took a career break to care for our daughter while she was little. During this time we relocated back to the beautiful west coast of Scotland and I made my first cake!

My Cakes

The first 'proper' cake I made was for my husband's 40th birthday. I loved the process and found I was completely hooked. In the beginning I made cakes for friends and family, and what began as a little hobby soon turned into a full blown obsession. I took the leap to hand in my resignation to Rolls-Royce and Cake Halliday was created - I had travelled full circle back to the artistic world which I had always loved.

Over the last ten years I have perfected the skills it takes to make a great cake, picking up a few awards along the way. I recently came 2nd in the UK Cake Masters Magazine cake design contest 'Illusion Cakes' category for my Hummingbird guitar cake, and this year I was awarded the Scottish Confetti Wedding Awards title for 'Best Cake Design'. It's always an exciting thought wondering what's next on the horizon!
